a) Awarding of the Outstanding Professional Librarians Award
given annually by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in June.
PLAI handles the nomination process. Other awards granted every year include:
• Hall of Fame Award – the highest award given to a member in recognition of
professional excellence, leadership, and service.
• Eulogio B. Rodriguez Professional Award – given in recognition of remarkable
professionalism or major contribution to Philippine librarianship.
• Gabriel A. Bernardo Leadership Award – given to the immediate past president
for meritorious service.
• Cirilio B. Perez Award – given in appreciation of leadership in organizing
the previous year’s National Book Week celebration.
• Severino I. Velasco Award – given to the overall chairperson of the past year’s
National Conference Committee.
• Service Award – given in gratitude for services rendered by any past officer,
trustee, or member for at least four years.
b) Publication of library literature such as regular quarterly
newsletters, annual directories of members, bulletins, professional journals,
proceedings, and similar materials.
c) Granting of scholarships as financial assistance to members
for graduate thesis work in the amount of ₱5,000 each. In the year 2000, the
association also awarded ₱10,000 for the best thesis or graduate research work,
and another ₱10,000 for the best librarian’s research work.
d) Support for international librarianship through membership
and active participation in regional and international organizations such as
the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and the Congress of
Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL).
e) Advocacy programs promoting the interests of professional
librarians through lobbying, mass demonstrations, walks-for-a-cause, fund
drives, and related activities that strengthen unity among members.
f) Outreach programs including storytelling for orphaned
children, book donations to barangay libraries and public information centers,
librarians’ visits to prisons, and other initiatives aimed at promoting reading
habits nationwide, especially during National Book Week.
g) Participation in the annual Philippine Book Fair and other
book fairs at the local, regional, and international levels.
h) Holding of annual fellowship luncheons, anniversary
celebrations, and related events that foster camaraderie among members.
